METHODS OF TRT ADMINISTRATION

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) can be administered through various methods, depending on the patient's needs, preferences, and doctor's recommendation. TRT is used for low T treatment in Tampa. Below are the most common methods of TRT administration, though not all are offered by our TRT Clinic Tampa

Intramuscular Injections (IM)

Testosterone is injected directly into the muscle, typically in the buttocks or thigh. Injections can range from once a week to once every two weeks, depending on the specific testosterone ester (e.g., testosterone cypionate, testosterone enanthate).

It is a well-established method, relatively inexpensive and is directly absorbed into the bloodstream.

Subcutaneous Injections (SQ)

Testosterone is injected under the skin, typically in the fatty tissue of the abdomen or thigh. Similar to intramuscular injections, injections are typically once a week or bi-weekly. Subcutaneous injections may be less painful than IM injections.

Topical Gels

Testosterone gel is applied to the skin, usually on the shoulders, upper arms, or abdomen. This occurs once daily, typically in the morning. It is convenient and easy to use, non-invasive, and can provide more stable testosterone levels throughout the day.

Topical Creams

Similar to gels but in a cream form, and applied to the skin once or twice daily, depending on the product. It absorbs more slowly, providing a steadier release, is easy to use and non-invasive.

Testosterone Patches

Testosterone patches are applied to the skin, usually on the back, stomach, or thighs typically once every 24 hours. This supplies a steady release of testosterone. It is easy to apply and non-invasive.

Buccal (Mouth) Tablets

These are small tablets placed on the gum or cheek (buccal cavity) that release testosterone. The frequency is typically twice a day. It is convenient and discreet.

Pellets (Subcutaneous Implants)

These are small testosterone pellets are implanted under the skin, usually in the hip or buttocks area that typically lasts 3–6 months. These are long-acting (reduces the need for frequent dosing) and steady release of testosterone.

Oral Testosterone

Testosterone is available in oral tablet or capsule form, though it is less common due to concerns about liver toxicity. The frequency is typically 1-2 times per day. It is easy and convenient and non-invasive.

Nasal Gel

A gel form of testosterone is applied inside the nostrils, where it is absorbed. The frequency is typically 2-3 times per day. It is easy to apply and non-invasive and avoids skin transfer issues.

Choosing the Right Method

The choice of TRT administration method depends on whether patients prefer injections, while others prefer topical options for convenience. Another issue is cost. Some methods like gels and pellets, may be more expensive than injections and not be suitable for some patients.

Preference and cost aside, the method that best maintains consistent blood levels of testosterone may be preferable for some patients.

Another consideration is side effects of each method. Some methods may be associated with skin irritation, pain, or other side effects.

Some patients prefer less frequent dosing (e.g., pellets or injections every few weeks), while others might opt for more consistent dosing (e.g., daily gels or creams).

It’s important to consult a healthcare provider to determine the most suitable method of TRT for each individual based on their lifestyle, health status, and preferences. At our TRT Clinic Tampa, our certified providers work with patients to come up with a mutually agreeable treatment plan and method of administration.
